Doing a yoga teacher training abroad is a dream come true for most people. The excitement of choosing a destination, the anticipation of getting on a flight, the sheer awe of arriving somewhere completely foreign to embark on a spiritual journey; it’s all part of the experience.
Let’s see why training abroad is better than training next door.
Become a yoga teacher in one month
Before we begin talking about all the ‘fun’ reasons why you should do your yoga teacher training abroad, let’s have a quick look at the biggest logistical reason: it’s much faster to complete the course abroad.
Doing a training at your local studio will take anywhere between 3-5 months. That’s a commitment of every single weekend (between 1-3 days, depending on the program) for a good chunk of the year. Failure to attend 100% of the course means you won’t graduate, which is a tricky commitment for most people. When you compare this to a one month course abroad, local teacher trainings can actually be more of a hassle.
The kicker is that usually, local courses aren’t cheaper than the ones abroad! So, if you can find a good deal for flights, you may actually be able to save yourself money. Most importantly, you will also be able to start teaching quicker.
Focus entirely on your yoga journey
Part of the magic of doing a yoga teacher training is immersing yourself in the yogic lifestyle. Daily meditation and asana practice, studying the philosophy of yoga, eating vegetarian meals, and connecting with yoga masters, is what will make you a great yoga teacher and enhance your experience.
Unfortunately, if you know that you still need to come home and do your chores, or even go to work the next day, it’s simply not the same. The start and stop of weekend courses can hinder your spiritual development as your mind won’t be 100% present all the time (we know, we’re human too!).
Even if you take a month-long course in your home country, it still may not be the same. Your family, significant other, even your boss will know that you’re only a bus ride or a quick flight away, making it easier for them to “bother” you.
Choose from a wider variety of teachers
There are many yoga teachers who make their living teaching courses abroad. This is their fulltime job; they are experts at teaching future yoga teachers.
By doing a yoga teacher training abroad, you have a choice from among thousands of teachers, not just the ones that live close to your neighborhood. Although you may not be able to build a connection with them prior to the course (permission to Instagram stalk granted), you can be sure that you will be training with world-renowned and experienced teachers.
Have a multicultural experience (and vacation!)
There’s nothing like waking up in a foreign land.
Walking down the street filled with exotic aromas, tasting colorful dishes, hearing the chatter of locals, feeling the sand between your toes, gazing upon ancient monuments that have stood the test of time, seeing a sunset from the other side of the globe -- this is what makes a yoga teacher training special.
Make friends from around the world
Doing a yoga teacher training in a hot spot like Bali will allow you to make international connections, both with your teachers and with your fellow students. Unlike at your local yoga studio, where you would be lucky to run into someone from a different neighborhood, doing your training abroad will probably mean that you will have a mixed bag of students in the course. This is important for several reasons:
- If their English isn’t perfect, you will develop patience and skills in teaching students for whom English isn’t their first language.
- You will gain an insight into the habits of other cultures and learn the differences of what is appropriate and what isn’t, i.e. certain cultures are comfortable with manual adjustments and others prefer verbal only.
- If you choose to be a traveling yoga teacher, then this is the perfect time to develop relationships that will allow you to reconnect in the future -- you never know who you will meet!
